Chief Metzger began his long career in the fire service in 1977 with four years as a Fire Explorer. He joined the Brighton Fire Department, a combination department, as a volunteer in 1981. He quickly rose through the ranks becoming Lieutenant, Captain, Battalion Chief, and served as Chief from 1994 to 1998. He continues to be an active volunteer responding to fire calls, attending drills and weekly meetings, and by serving on various committees including the recruitment and retention team.
Chief Metzger was elected to the Fire Commission in Brighton in 1998, and served for five terms until 2023. As a commissioner he served on many committees including the Truck, Personnel, Labor Management, EMS and he started our Diversity. Equity and Inclusion Committee. He still servies on many of these committees.
In 2023, he was hired as the department’s first Recruitment and Retention Coordinator (RRC) to place a concerted effort on volunteer recruitment and retention. The department goal since pre Covid was to hire someone to be able to do a lot more outreach and attend events to educate our residents on our fire department.
HIs professional career includes sales and marketing and most recently, owning and managing a local transportation & logistics business in the Rochester area for 25 years, which was sold in 2022. He enjoys biking, working out, traveling and spending time with his family and friends.
