Craig Daugherty retired as the Fire Chief of San Juan County Fire Department (SJCFD), in December 2019. SJCFD is a combination department located in the Four Corners region of New Mexico, consisting of 10 fire Districts with 23 stations covering an area of over 4000 square miles. The department handled over 9,000 calls per year with a force of 220 volunteers and 14 paid staff. Chief Daugherty has an extensive fire background stretching back over 35 years. He started out as a volunteer, where he “got the bug.” He earned a degree from Texas A&M University primarily funding his way through college by working as a seasonal wildland firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service in Challis, ID. After graduating, he worked for various land management agencies, including the Idaho Department of Lands and New Mexico State Forestry, before transitioning to SJCFD. He served as Wildland Division Chief and Deputy Chief of Operations before becoming the Chief of the department. He has been a member of Incident Management Teams for over 22 years with 19 of those being on a National Interagency Type 1 team, where he attained the qualification of Operations Section Chief. Craig is a member of the IAFC’s wildland policy committee.
